Chapter twenty-four

Natalia

“Thanks, Angelica.” Natalia said lamely as the girl cleaned the wounds across her cheek. All the other girls had cleared out quickly, leaving Angelica and Natalia the girls’ washroom to themselves. “I’m rather grateful to not have had to share the infirmary with Blake.”

“Bet he would not have minded.” She raised a brow. “And please, call me Angie.”

Natalia winced as the tonic met her skin, gripping the lip of the countertop beneath her until the stinging subsided. “I suppose it would have been a good opportunity to finish the job.” She forced a laugh.

Angie stepped back to look her in the eye. “Natalia…” She shook her head, blonde waves bouncing around her fair shoulders. “Are you blind?”

She blinked at her, unsure of what she meant. “No… why? Is there blood in my eyes?”

The blonde girl pressed the heel of her hand into her forehead and closed her eyes. “Celuna, grant me strength,” she whispered before looking back up at Natalia. “He fancies you.”

“…who?”

“BLAKE,” she spat. “Obviously! Have you two dated?”

“Me and Blake?” Natalia stared at the girl incredulously. “You cannot be serious.”

Angie tsk-ed and shook her head again, reapproaching with the medicated cotton pad. “Men are dumb,” she explained matter-of-factly. “They do not express themselves well—or at all, in some cases—but when a man gives a woman as much attention as Blake gives you? It means something.”

Natalia scoffed. “Blake hates me because of what I am—or, what I’m not, I suppose…” She shook her head, wincing again at the sudden burn.

“Hold still!” Angie scolded.

“Sorry,” Natalia muttered. “Blake believes I’m deformed. He’s offended by my very existence—” She stifled a laugh. “I mean, the way he feels about me must be the furthest thing from attraction.”

“Dear,” Angie dropped the cotton pad into the neighboring trash bin before reaching into her satchel and producing a small box of bandages. “You have got it so wrong.” She smiled a bit, the kind of smile that only changed half her face, as if she’d been reminded of a funny story.

Natalia didn’t respond. The girl was wrong, she knew it. Blake had reminded her of her worthlessness for years and had never said a nice thing to her—until the night prior, when he’d gone to her house to apologize. A poor apology, which she did not think redeemable, but an apology, nonetheless. A strange coincidence that these occurrences would happen back-to-back, she thought, but a coincidence, at best. Natalia dangled her legs between them as she idly tapped the countertop beside her.

Angie spoke again as she opened a fresh bandage. “You fancy my brother?”

Natalia stifled a smile. “Yes, I do.”

Angie nodded as she brought the bandage to her cheek. “He likes you, too.”

“I know.”

“I mean, a lot.” Angie emphasized.

Her smile broke free. “The feeling is mutual.”

Angie smiled as well—that same, crooked smile. “I’m no good at the over-protective-sister thing.”

Natalia laughed aloud. “Is that what you were going for?”

The girl nudged Natalia’s knee with her hip, laughing along with her. “I’m working on it.” She reached into the box for another strip.
